Description of project

The cellular interior is separated from an external environment by a selectively-permeable cytoplasmic membrane. Interactions with antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) can disrupt the membrane barrier function. AMPs are part of the host-defense system of many organisms and promising candidates to become a new class of therapeutics to prevent the forecast of 10 million deaths per year from antibiotic-resistant bacteria in 2050. The aim of this project is to design new peptides that selectively target and disrupt the membranes of pathogens but not those of human cells. To obtain such peptides, we will develop a novel coarse-grained model of membranes, which will enable us to establish the relationship between peptide sequence motifs and their affinity to membranes with specific lipid compositions. Moreover, free energy calculations will be used to identify the critical peptide features required for membrane disruption. The project will be complemented by experiments providing verification and feedback for peptide-membrane affinity and disruption. The successful candidates will be evaluated for antimicrobial activity and human cell toxicity. These findings could be utilized in the design of new pharmacologically-relevant peptide therapeutics or as sensors and biomarkers.

Requirements:

PhD in computational physics/biophysics/chemistry and related fields

Theoretical knowledge of Molecular Dynamics and Free Energy Calculations

Some years of work experience in simulations with protein-membrane systems

Published in impactful journals in the field, corresponding to given stage of career demonstrating creativity and scientific quality

Good English language – spoken and written

Motivated person with collaborative mind set

We offer:

Interesting position in a dynamically expanding research institute

Competitive salary and benefits package

Background of a recognized and successful institution with supportive and international working environment

Environment promoting interdisciplinarity of research

In house core facilities

Support of administrative departments (including grant office service)

Support with the relocation process (welcome office service)

6 weeks of paid holiday

Anticipated start date: Negotiable

Institute

CEITEC is a scientific centre in the fields of life sciences, advanced materials and technologies whose aim is to establish itself as a recognized centre for basic as well as applied research. The project is part of a European Research Council (ERC) project and a Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) funded consortium with the laboratories of Prof Julea Butt (University of East Anglia) and Prof Lars Jeuken (University of Leeds) on sunlight-driven chemistry with material-biocatalyst hybrid systems. The aims are to develop strategies for the integration of electroactive microbes in bespoke photoelectrodes (ERC) and the coupling of bacteria to synthetic light absorbers (BBSRC). We thereby address the need for new innovations in the solar fuels field and develop a new chemical biology platform, in which biological pathways can be systematically exploited for solar-to-chemical conversion.
Applicants should have (or be about to obtain) a PhD in Microbiology, Biological Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemistry or a closely related discipline. A strong background in working with anaerobic cell cultures, synthetic biology, electromicrobiology, bioelectrochemistry, microbial fuel cells/microbial electrosynthesis and photochemistry is desirable for the position. An expertise in molecular biology techniques (e.g. protein extraction, DNA/RNA extraction) is an added advantage. The applicant should also have experience in coordinating activities as part of a larger interdisciplinary team. Candidates are encouraged to think outside of their formal field of training to fit into a creative, collaborative and dynamic research environment. A strong record of research productivity and creativity as well as excellent communication, management and English writing skills will be required. Understanding these multiple interconnections requires synergy between many areas of molecular, cellular or biomedical experimental biology or biology, more dedicated to the study of aging and age-related diseases such as cancer. To this goal, the Institute for Research on Cancer and Aging Nice (IRCAN UMR7284, U1081) was created on January 1st, 2012, by the University of Cote d'Azur (UCA), the National Institute for Health and Medical Research (Inserm), and the National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS). The IRCAN was established to develop a strong research center focusing on cancer and aging, in the Medical School of Nice and in partnership with the cancer “Center Antoine Lacassagne” (CAL) and the Nice University Hospital (CHUN).

The research carried out at the IRCAN involves major areas of biology, from basic research to medical applications, with the objectives of improving our understanding of the common foundation between aging and cancer, and developing innovative strategies to prevent and cure cancer and chronic age-related pathologies.

Our laboratory is made up of about fifteen people and we work in a dynamic and international environment. The candidate will also benefit from the scientific environment (14 teams and around 200 people dedicated to research on cancer and aging) and the technical platforms made available by IRCAN.

General information
Contract Period: 36 months (12-month contract renewable twice)

Expected date of employment: 1 October 2020
Proportion of work: Full time
Remuneration: -gross monthly salary from 2643 € to 3941 € depending on previous experience (Social Security included)
Desired level of education: Higher than 5-year university degree
Experience required: at least one accepted paper.

Contact: [email protected] or [email protected]

Applications: CV + 1 motivation letter + 2 reference letters

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) to work in the Reisner group in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, UK.

The successful candidate will also be expected to help guide undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as taking on laboratory management duties.

More information about the Reisner group, including relevant publications, can be found at http://www-reisner.ch.cam.ac.uk/ (see also a recent publication on this topic: Fang, Kalathil, Divitini, Wang & Reisner, Proc.

The Laboratory for Brain-Gut Axis Studies (LaBGAS) is situated at KU Leuven, Belgium – a top-ranked university in the heart of Europe (30 min to Brussels, 2 hours to London, Paris and Amsterdam). Our internationally oriented and well-recognized team has established an innovative research line that integrates biochemical techniques to study neurohumoral gut-brain signaling mechanisms with advanced neuroimaging techniques (including fMRI, radioligand PET and combined PET/MR imaging) to unravel how gastrointestinal hormones, nutrients and microbiota-related signals impact on cognitive and affective processes by interfering with their underlying neural mechanisms at the level of the brain. Collaborative, interdisciplinary research is performed by a network of experienced researchers, clinicians and students who are fascinated by brain-gut axis research in both health and disease.

We have also established a productive network of collaborative research within KU Leuven and abroad, and this project specifically results from a close collaboration with the Metabolic Research group at St. Clara Research Ltd./University of Basel who are specialized in studying hunger/satiety hormone responses to the administration of various sugars and non-caloric sweeteners as well as their effects on gastric emptying, appetite-related sensations, food intake and brain functioning.

The present PhD project is part of the FWO (Research Foundation Flanders)-sponsored “Lead Agency Procedure” program with the SNSF (Swiss National Science Foundation) entitled “Replacing sugar with the natural sweetener erythritol as an alternative for artificial sweeteners: satiating and rewarding without calories?”, granted to Prof. Van Oudenhove (KU Leuven), Dr. Meyer-Gerspach and Dr. Wölnerhanssen (both St. Clara Research Ltd./University of Basel).

Website unit

Project

Sweet is an innately attractive and rewarding taste to humans because of the caloric value of carbohydrates, but the sharp rise sugar consumption is an important contributor to the dramatic globalrise in obesity and associated metabolic disorders, especially type 2 diabetes mellitus. Therefore, replacing sugar with artificial non-caloric sweeteners (NCS) has been widely adopted as a strategy to reduce caloric intake and body weight. However, despite a considerable increase in their consumption, the beneficial effects of substituting sugar with NCS on short- and long-term energy balance remain controversial. This may be explained by the fact that NCS may lack the satiating and rewarding properties of sugar because of their inability to influence the release of hunger/satiety hormones (in addition to their lack of calories). The non-caloric natural sweetener erythritol may be an ideal alternative substitute for sugar, since we recently showed that it increases satiety hormone levels. However, its effects on appetite, satiation, and satiety,as well as the brain mechanisms governing them have not been studied systematically.

The major aim of the present bilateral PhD project of KU Leuven and St. Clara Research Ltd./University of Basel is to study the effects of replacing sugar with erythritol on food intake regulation in healthy humans, by identifying the brain mechanisms and (hormonal) gut-brain communication underlying these effects. This translates into 3 research objectives:

Investigate the effect of intragastric administration on (dopaminergic) homeostatic and reward system responses in the brain using simultaneous PET/MR imaging.
Investigate the brain responses to oral administration and the modulatory effect of cognitions about caloric content using fMRI.
Investigate the effect of oral pre-loads on brain responses to anticipatory (visual) and consummatory (gustatory) food reward stimuli using fMRI.

Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate with Master degree; a Medical degree or Master Degree in Biomedical, Behavioral, or Neurosciences are preferred.

Candidates have a genuine interest in the interaction between neural, psychological and bodily processes as well as in neurosciences, particularly functional brain imaging

Besides excellent organizational and experimental research skills, the candidate should possess excellent interpersonal skills and communication skills in English language, both verbally as well as in academic writing.

Besides a strong motivation to work with subjects in a research context, candidates should also have a strong interest in data analysis. Experience with Matlab, SPM, SAS and/or R are an asset but not a prerequisite.

Offer

PhD in Biomedical Sciences

Estimated net salary per month: ca. Göttingen, “City of Science”, located near the center of Germany, the University Medical Center Göttingen is embedded in the city’s attractive network of scientific research facilities.

The Institute of Clinical Pharmacology is conducting research on new and established drugs with a focus on the evaluation of drug effects, efficacy, safety, and tolerability. The aim of our research activity is to identify and optimise personalised therapy options tailored to individual patients or patient groups. To this end, interdisciplinary medical expertise is combined with methodological excellence to gain new knowledge for important medical indication areas.

Our methodological approaches include mainly:

molecular and cell biology, in vitro assays, genotyping

clinical studies of drugs involving patients and healthy volunteers

pharmaceutical analytics in biological samples

The Institute of Clinical Pharmacology is working towards more efficient and safer drug therapies for patients to improve health and well-being.

Research project:
Almost a third of drugs currently on the market constitute racemic mixtures, and stereoisomers can differ significantly in their therapeutic and adverse effects. The aim of this project is to contribute to a more comprehensive knowledge of stereoselective recognition of substrates and inhibitors by drug membrane transporters. The focus will be on organic anion and organic cation transporters of the solute carrier family that mediate uptake of drugs into the liver and kidneys for metabolism and elimination. We are particularly interested in transport proteins that show pronounced differences in their activity due to genetic variation with the overall aim to enable a more precise individualisation of drug therapy. Stereospecificity will be studied in clinically relevant combinations of transporters and
substrates or inhibitors using in vitro assays and HPLC-MS/MS analyses. Cell lines recombinantly expressing these transporters will be created using molecular biological techniques. Altogether, this project will contribute to the development of more effective and safe drugs as well as in individualised therapy.

We require:

very good to excellent university degree (Masters, State Exam, Diploma, or similar) in
Molecular Medicine, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, Biotechnology, Pharmacy,
or a related field

advantageous but not a requirement is practical experience in molecular biology, in vitro
assays, or HPLC-MS analytics

high intrinsic motivation and commitment

ability to work independently as well as in a team

perseverance and flexibility

English language proficiency

We offer:

interdisciplinary scientific environment

a friendly and welcoming work environment

international networking possibilities

competitive salary according to 65 % TV-L for 3 years

Are you passionate about science, full of ideas and innovative potential that drive change and enjoy working in an international, fast-paced environment? Are you motivated by the societal impact of research and seek an opportunity to play an instrumental part in the development of emerging technologies for biology, healthcare and environmental applications? Then the Chair of Biological Imaging (CBI) at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and its integrated Institute of Biological and Medical Imaging (IBMI) at the Helmholtz Zentrum Muenchen (HMGU), Germany is the ideal environment for you!

CBI is the cornerstone of a rapidly expanding bioengineering ecosystem in the Munich science area; including the Research Center TranslaTUM and the Helmholtz Pioneer Campus, which integrate bioengineering with oncology and metabolic disorders, respectively. CBI scientists develop next-generation imaging and sensing methods to measure previously inaccessible properties of living systems, hence, catalyzing breakthroughs in biology, medicine and the environment. Comprising 11 inter-disciplinary laboratories and scientists from more than 25 countries, CBI offers state-of-the-art infrastructure for innovative research and a perfect environment to accelerate your career. Our research aims to shift the paradigm of biological discovery and translation to address major health challenges of our time and develop the medical solutions of tomorrow.

Join our team and be part of our rich and dynamic research culture of enquiry and innovation. CBI researchers come from the top ranks of physics, engineering, chemistry, biomedicine and computer science and our pipeline frequently yields high-impact papers, successful technology spin-offs and commercialization. Our research is regularly featured in major news channels and has received broad recognition including several prestigious awards and considerable research funding from national and international sources.

We now seek a highly qualified and motivated PhD candidate (f/m/d) to develop novel, compact optical systems and ultrasonic sensors for biomedical and environmental applications.

The Mission:

Multispectral optoacoustic imaging and sensing combine the high contrast of optical excitation with the high resolution and deep penetration of ultrasound. These characteristics give optoacoustic imaging many advantages over other imaging methods for applications in biology, medicine, environmental research and pollution monitoring. As the next step in developing optoacoustic devices for commercialization, we want to miniaturize both the illumination source and ultrasound detector in order to create low-cost, portable products for use in laboratories, clinics, and in the field. Importantly, we want to optimize every component of the sensor in order to increase signal-to-noise-ratio and sensitivity.

The successful candidate will develop novel miniaturized illumination sources and ultrasound detectors for optoacoustic imaging and combine them with novel signal processing techniques based on artificial intelligence, machine learning and deep learning as part of her/his PhD project. The development process will give the successful candidate the opportunity to strengthen her/his skills on electronics, lasers, optics, prototyping and 3D printing and computation skills. She/he will be involved with every stage of device design, prototyping, testing and optimization, as well as with dissemination of results in the form of publications and, if appropriate, patents.

Qualifications

· High motivation, scientific curiosity and ability to work independently

· A degree in Physics, Optics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or a related field and an excellent academic track record

· Practical experience in optics and fiber optics

Experience in designing electronic circuits (analog filter, amplifiers, etc.)
Experience in product design and development
· Programming capabilities (for example, Matlab, C/C++)

· Practical experience in hardware control, data acquisition and synchronization, system development and integration

· Team player skills and enthusiasm to work in a multi-disciplinary, collaborative environment

· Excellent command of the English language

The following qualifications are considered advantageous:

· Experience in 3D printing technologies

· Experience in experimental research

· Basic knowledge of optoacoustic imaging

Our offer

We offer you the unique chance to make a difference in future healthcare.
