Does anyone have information about the natural occurrence of sorbic acid in fruits?

This was found while hiking in Southern Colorado off trail . When poked with a stick it secreted some white goop and made there eyes burn. It is big, around the size of a smaller beach ball. It does not seem to be attached to the ground. What is it?
