Integrating multiple dimensions to understand tumor evolution and design new therapies
Professor Elisa Oricchio is a full professor at EPFL, Director of the Swiss Institute for Experimental Cancer Research (ISREC@EPFL), and Co-Director of the Swiss Cancer Center Leman. Her research focuses on cancer genomics, 3D chromatin organization, and B-cell malignancies, with a strong translational focus on identifying therapeutic targets and biomarkers.
The genetic evolution of a tumor occurs through the gradual accumulation of genomic alterations such as mutations and chromosomal abnormalities. However, tumors can continue to progress and develop resistance to treatments even without acquiring new genetic changes, highlighting the importance of non-genetic mechanisms in tumor evolution.
Professor Oricchio’s laboratory investigates the interplay between genetic and epigenetic mechanisms, and how these influence tumor initiation and response to anti-cancer therapies. In particular, her work has shown how cancer cells co-opt the three-dimensional structure of chromatin in the nucleus to support tumor development and progression. Her group has also demonstrated how specific genomic alterations can alter interactions between cancer cells and the tumor microenvironment.
