Description
Our department focuses on (innate) immune cells and their exploitation in the immunotherapy for cancer and viral infection. Co-infection with hepatitis B and hepatitis D virus (HBV/HDV) can cause the most severe form of viral hepatitis. Current knowledge about the function of the immune system, especially virus-reactive innate(-like) immune cells including natural killer (NK) and gd T cells in this infection is limited. We established a robust co-culture model that allows for the study of human immune cell reactivity to HDV infection in vitro and demonstrated a profound interferon-beta-mediated activation and cytotoxicity of human NK cells (1). To follow up on these findings we are looking for a PhD student to investigate: i) The response of NK cells and gd T cells to HDV/HBV co-infection, ii) Modulation of NK and gd T cell activity by macrophages/monocytes and plasmacytoid dendritic cells

Candidate requirements
Profile of candidate’s qualification: We are looking for a candidate passionate about scientific research and the ability to develop and pursue independent ideas. The successful candidate must hold a university degree in Biology, Biomedicine or related fields (master or equivalent) and must demonstrate excellent English language skills. Further prerequisites include a profound knowledge of cell and molecular biology and immunology.
