Employer

European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Hamburg, Germany

Description

At EMBL Hamburg an exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic Mechanical Engineer to strengthen the instrumentation team in the construction of new instruments for synchrotron beamlines at the existing PETRA III and the planned future PETRA IV synchrotron. The Hamburg Unit of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory is in charge of four experimental stations on the PETRA III synchrotron, one of the world brightest X-rays sources run by DESY in Hamburg (https://www.embl-hamburg.de/services/ ). These experimental stations operate 24/7 and are used by hundreds of international users every year for addressing their research questions in Structural Biology. Mechanics with precisions in the µm and nm range are needed for conditioning and controlling X-ray beams and for handling small and fragile biological samples. Many components operate under cryogenic and/or UHV conditions.

Your role
You will participate in the construction, installation and commissioning of synchrotron beamline instruments, prototypes, and entire experimental setups. Tasks will include developing innovative ideas for experimental challenges, installation and characterization of prototypes, iterative improvements and troubleshooting, leading potentially to commercializable products. You will be involved in the beamline instrument development for the next generation synchrotron PETRA IV. You will work in an international team of technicians, engineers and scientists. You will support scientists in finding technical solutions for complex experimental problems and you will support user operation at the beamlines.

You have
A master degree (or equivalent) in precision mechanical engineering, physics engineering, or mechatronics
Demonstrated experience in technical drawing with 3D CAD systems like Solid Edge or equivalent packages and expert FEA knowledge in particular about thermal and vibration problems preferably using ANSYS
Knowledge about precision-positioning technology is important.
Excellent communication skills to collaborate in an international and multidisciplinary team. The working language is English

You might also have
Experience in the following fields is a plus: scientific instrumentation involving vacuum systems, cryogenic systems, robotic systems, automation systems.

Why join us
EMBL is an inclusive, equal opportunity employer offering attractive conditions and benefits appropriate to an international research organisation with a very collegial and family friendly working environment. The remuneration package comprises a competitive salary, a comprehensive pension scheme, medical, educational and other social benefits, as well as financial support for relocation and installation, including your family. Staff working at the synchrotron radiation beamlines operated by EMBL Hamburg Unit benefits from cutting-edge technology and opportunities for career development and collaboration with colleagues from all six EMBL sites.

What else you need to know
We are Europe’s flagship research laboratory for the life sciences – an intergovernmental organisation performing scientific research in disciplines including molecular biology, physics, chemistry and computer science. We are an international, innovative and interdisciplinary laboratory with more than 1700 employees from many nations, operating across six sites, in Heidelberg (HQ), Barcelona, Hinxton near Cambridge, Hamburg, Grenoble and Rome.

Our mission is to offer vital services; in training scientists, students and visitors at all levels; to develop new instruments and methods in the life sciences, and actively engage in technology transfer activities, and to integrate European life science research. Please note that appointments on fixed term contracts can be renewed, depending on circumstances at the time of the review.
