The marvels of science fascinate almost everyone. For many, this fascination turns to passion. With the promises of great adventures, they embark on a life-altering journey with science. Reality hits: an almost ethereal loving relationship turns to an unpleasant battle that leaves very few standing.
Having to sacrifice one's morals and principles for success was the last straw for a postdoc, who finally decided to say goodbye to a once beloved profession. As a soulful farewell, a letter was written and posted anonymously on the 'Yes, another science blog'. The letter poignantly portrays the difficulties that torment many researchers. As the apathy towards the potholes of academia continues, the number of people who are left to fight the inner struggle of a love-hate relationship with science will only increase.
I wanted to share this blog entry, not to shun academia, but only to exhibit yet another example of the widely present discontent amongst researchers. To expect science as a profession to be devoid of the challenges that many other workforces face as a way of life would indeed be preposterous. But for those who grew to love science, it’s certainly heartbreaking when you realize that in science all is not fair and square!
Some continue to brave despite the let downs, while for others, science may indeed be a story of a love lost!
