Abstract

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form symbioses with most terrestrial plants and play an ecologically important role in soil carbon dynamics. However, direct CO2 effects on the fungi remain unclear. We show that CO2-enriched conditions enhance the asymbiotic growth of Rhizophagus clarus in the presence of fatty acids. The response pattern to high CO2 differed between the tested species. These findings provide new insights into the physiological characteristics of AM fungi.
