About

Summary

Prof. Arias works in the Forestry Engineering School at Costa Rica Institute of Technology (ITCR). Forestry Innovation Center (CIF)

For 25 years, new knowledge and improvement of productive systems based on human-forest interaction has been generated through the following lines of research:
- domestication of tropical timber species for commercial reforestation and climate change mitigation projects
- optimization of techniques and practices for forest plantations management
- strategic collaborations with forestry companies to increase forest productivity
- technological soil management (mechanization, amendments, mycorrhizae, bio-activators, hydrogels)
- study on eco-physiological aspects in trees and agro-productive systems with abaca
- physiological models and studies on climate change effects
- applications of hyperspectroscopy and thermography in forest management
- hydraulic aspects in trees and water stress resistance to understanding climate change effects on tropical forests
- generation of new knowledge about energy crops (trees and oilseeds) and their transformation into energy (pyrolysis, gasification, biodigestion, boilers, biodiesel)
- carbon dynamics and water cycle in plantations and forests
- silvicultural management of bamboo species
- mobile applications for forest management
- "machine learning" and use of pattern recognition algorithms for automatic identification of endangered or threatened tree species
- new knowledge about abaca cultivation in tree systems.
