Summary

Cell viability is the quantification of the proportion of living and healthy cells within a population. Assessing cell viability, a key step in daily cell manipulation, is often a requirement for subsequent analysis and processing. Cell viability is also important for the estimation of cell proliferation and cytotoxicity. These cell-based assays are important parameters for biological studies and drug development.

Introduction

Multiple parameters can be used to determine cell viability, such as cell membrane integrity, mitochondrial function and metabolic activity. These parameters can sense different characteristics and provide a visual readout of cell health using fluorescence microscopy, confocal microscopy, microplate reader, or flow cytometer.

Different assays can individually or together form the basis of assessing cell viability. Choosing the best cell viability assay to suit particular needs from a variety of options available requires understanding what each assay measures as an endpoint, the correlation, sensitivity, reliability and compatibility of different measurements with relevant cell types, and the limitations of different assays.
