Adolescent sexual and reproductive health information communication skill needs in Ghana: a culturally sensitive perspective.

Abstract

Globally, adolescents face challenges related to their sexual and reproductive health. Evidence suggests that adolescent-parent communication on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) is fundamental to improving its outcomes. This study was conducted to explore the adolescents sexual and reproductive health information communication skill needs in Ghana from a culturally sensitive perspective.
This is the third phase of an explanatory sequential Mixed Methods Research (MMR) study. In this phase, a qualitative descriptive exploratory design was used to interview 10 adolescents, based on saturation between the ages of 13 to 16 years, who were purposively recruited from the Asante Akyem North Municipality in Ghana. Thematic analysis was done using Braun and Clarke's approach.
Four themes emerged, namely: Adolescent and Parent Attitudes, Sociocultural Issues, SRH Information Communication, and Adolescent SRH Information Communication Skill Needs.
Adolescents have sexual and reproductive health information communication skill needs. A culturally sensitive sexual and reproductive health information communication intervention is recommended, since it may have value in guiding adolescents and parents in the communication process.
