Abstract

Diabetic kidney disease(DKD), characterized by persistent proteinuria and progressive decline in glomerular filtration rate, is a major microvascular complication of diabetes and has become a major challenge threatening global public health. Due to the complex pathogenesis of DKD and the difficulties in early diagnosis, as well as the complexity of patient management, the prevention and treatment of DKD are challenging. Currently, there are still no safe and effective prevention and treatment strategies. Searching for new therapeutic targets to prevent and treat DKD has become a key challenge in this field. TCM is a Chinese treasure. Its multi-component and multi-target characteristics offer significant advantages in treating DKD, providing multi-level and multi-step intervention. Therefore, exploring the disease essence of DKD based on the theory, method, formula, and medicine of TCM and discovering effective TCM drugs for the treatment is a key content of modern research in the field of the prevention and treatment of DKD with TCM. Animal models are crucial for medical research. The mechanism exploration of DKD and the development and evaluation of related drugs all rely on the establishment of experimental animal models of DKD. In the process of constructing stable models that can accurately reflect the clinical manifestations and pathophysiological characteristics of DKD, a scientific and reasonable modeling method is the primary consideration factor. Multiple studies have found that Chinese herbal compounds, single herbs, and monomers can effectively intervene in the progression of DKD and have deeply analyzed some specific functions and molecular mechanisms. Currently, there are few systematic reviews on the construction of DKD animal models and TCM intervention. This paper focused on the selection of DKD animal models, modeling methods, model evaluation, and TCM intervention effect, with the aim of providing a reference for scientific research and clinical treatment of DKD.
