Abstract

Although it is a relatively common occurrence in the genitourinary and gastrointestinal region, and on the skin, fibroepithelial polyp (FEP) is extremely rare in the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. Today, FEP is considered an atypical form of hamartoma. Here, we report the first case in the international literature of a 45-year-old male patient in whom FEP arose from the middle turbinate. The diagnosis of FEP was established after a detailed clinical, pathohistological, and immunohistochemical analysis. We also performed a literature review of English-language literature, in which we identified 10 previously described cases of FEP of the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, and nasopharynx. In the discussion, attention is focused on the pathogenesis of FEP, and on clinical, pathogenetic, and histological distinction between FEP and other hamartomatous lesions, fibrovascular polyps (FVP) of the nasopharynx, and hairy polyps (choristoma) of the nasal cavity and nasopharynx. Also, attention is drawn to the fact that cases of malignant transformation of FEP on the skin have been recorded. Considering that it is a rare and atypical hamartomatous lesion, which in other parts of the body has been subject to malignant transformation, FEP needs to be taken seriously and investigated in detail.
