Abstract
The aim of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of clinically used resilient silicone liners and denture base resins (DBRs) prepared using different fabrication methods and to evaluate how different combinations influenced these properties.
Three resilient silicone liners-SP Reline Soft (Happiden), Sofreliner Tough Medium (STM; Tokuyama Dental), and Mucosoft (Parkell)-and three DBRs-THD (Graphy; three-dimensional [3D]-printed resin), Ivotion (Ivoclar Vivadent, computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing-milled), and Rapid Simplified (Vertex-Dental B.V.)-were tested. The shear bond strength was measured for all nine liner-resin combinations (n = 10). The tensile strength of each liner and flexural strength of each resin were measured using a universal testing machine (Z010, ZwickRoell). One- and two-way analyses of variance were used for analyses with Bonferroni and Tukey's honest significant difference post hoc tests.
Shear bond strength differed significantly by liner type (p < 0.001), with STM exhibiting the highest strength. Liner type significantly affected tensile strength (p < 0.001). Mucosoft showed lower tensile strength compared to other liners, which were similar in tensile strength. Among DBRs, 3D-printed resin exhibited the highest flexural strength (p < 0.001).
Within the limitations of this in vitro study, STM exhibited the highest shear bond and tensile strength among liners, whereas THD exhibited the greatest flexural strength among resins. These findings highlight that material type and fabrication method substantially influence denture performance and durability, providing clinicians with evidence-based guidance for optimal material selection for relining.
