Abstract
Healthcare communication between patient and provider is important to enhance patient experience and ensure quality of care. Demographic differences, specifically sex and age, likely influence patient-provider interactions. The current study aims to examine how sex and age influence preferences for communication behaviors exhibited by their provider.
Participants who were at least 18 years of age, U.S. residents, fluent in English, completed an online Qualtrics survey (N = 986, Mage =47). A multivariate analysis of variance was conducted in RStudio (Version 2025.05.1+513) to examine differences in informational needs and communication preferences.
Females (MANOVA: F = 2.06, p <0.001) and older adults (F = 5.83, p <0.001) found it more important to have sufficient information and clear and open communication with the provider compared to males and emerging, younger, and middle-aged adults.
These findings highlight the importance of tailoring communication to socio-cultural factors including sex and age, which may enhance healthcare experiences.
