Abstract

To describe and analyse the characteristics of older adults with limited mobility identified through the ICOPE program in Corsica. Prospective data from individuals aged 60 years and older without loss of independence who were included in the ICOPE Corsica program between July 2022 and November 2024 were analysed. Limited mobility was identified using the chair rise test, followed by an in-depth assessment including the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). The characteristics of older adults with limited mobility were compared with those of older adults assessed for impairment in other intrinsic capacities using Student's t-test, chi-square tests, and multivariate analysis. Among the 1,184 older adults included (70% women; mean age: 74 years), 124 (10%) had limited mobility, of whom 70 underwent an in-depth assessment. Among these participants, 31% had already experienced a fall and 87% had poor physical performance according to the SPPB. Compared with the other older adults assessed (n = 246), those with limited mobility were more likely to live in rural areas and to present three or more impaired intrinsic capacities (p < 0.05). These associations were confirmed by multivariate analysis. These results suggest that limited mobility, as defined in step 1 of the ICOPE program, particularly affects older adults living in rural areas and is frequently associated with severe mobility impairment as well as with other alerts indicating established frailty.
