Abstract
Around 350 children a year are diagnosed with cancer in Sweden. Since parental involvement in a child's cancer treatment is high, it is important to evaluate and learn from their experiences of the care. The aim of this study was to examine what advice parents who have lost a child to cancer would like to give to staff caring for children with cancer. Data was collected from a survey sent out to all Swedish citizens who had been a legal guardian to a child that was diagnosed with cancer before the age of 17 and died in 2010-2015 before the age of 25. Answers to the survey question »What advice would you give to staff caring for children with cancer?« were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The data could be categorized into four categories: competent staff, treatment and empathy, communication and openness, and respect for child and family. The findings highlight critical areas where healthcare could improve in order to better meet the needs of parents to children with terminal cancer.
