Abstract
Temporomandibular dysfunction and the synonymous craniomandibular dysfunction remain contentious topics in the literature. Historically, research has focused on occlusion and its association with these conditions, often yielding contradictory findings. On the basis of a Medline search of these terms covering the past 40 years, in relation to current terms such as evidence-based dentistry and the pyramid of evidence, these methodological aspects were investigated. This resulted in recommendations for future research and considerations with respect to the role of dental occlusion in temporomandibular dysfunction. Seven guiding principles were developed to support this effort.
