Abstract

A reversible OFF/ON fluorescent switch was developed based on the photoisomerization of a green fluorescent protein chromophore analog. In cyclohexane, ultraviolet irradiation quenches its blue fluorescence via Z-to-E photoisomerization, while treatment with nucleophiles (e.g., piperidine) restores emission through an E-to-Z nucleophile-mediated addition/elimination process.
