Abstract
The overlap between primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a very rare association and rarely described in the literature; it is the least prevalent overlap syndrome regarding liver diseases, compared to autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) overlap with PBC and with PSC.
Carry out a review of clinical cases from our hospital, where patients with this syndrome were submitted to analysis.
Perform a descriptive observational study where clinical records of patients with PBC and PSC were reviewed during the years 2021 to 2023 at the Hospital Clínico de la Universidad de Chile.
8 patients with PBC-PSC overlap syndrome were found; All 8 patients were women, with cholestatic changes in their liver function tests, positive AMA antibodies, with radiographic imaging consisting of one or more focal stenosis on magnetic resonance cholangiography, compatible with PSC (except in one case, which was classified as small duct PSC).
Although the overlap between both pathologies is rare, it is important to diagnose it, since treatment may be different, and screening for different complications may be required.
