Abstract
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is one of the most frequent manifestations of antibiotic-induced dysbiosis, with an incidence ranging from 5% to 70% among patients treated with antibiotics. The use of certain probiotic strains may be useful in its prevention, as they help to reduce the incidence and duration of AAD, with an acceptable safety profile. This article presents a summary of the available evidence on the efficacy and safety of probiotics in AAD. In addition, it presents an algorithm for the use of probiotics in AAD aimed at facilitating decision-making by primary care physicians and pediatricians, integrating factors such as the prescribed antibiotic, patient characteristics, the probiotic strain, and dosing.
