Abstract
Effective management of chronic conditions like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) requires adequate knowledge of the disease and its treatment among patients. COPD patients can receive education through various modalities. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of expert-assisted video-based learning (EAV) on the retention of disease-specific knowledge among patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
A pre-post study was conducted among 58 participants with COPD at a tertiary care hospital. Phase I included translation and validation of the Bristol COPD Knowledge Questionnaire (BCKQ) into Kannada and the development of a video based on its components. In Phase II, participants' knowledge was assessed before and after the intervention using the BCKQ. EAV was provided, and knowledge retention was evaluated after 48 h post-intervention.
Majority of participants were male (74.1%) from the rural areas (77.6%), with a mean age of (63.6 ± 7.68), and had an educational status of below 10th (72.4%). The mean baseline knowledge score (pre-intervention) was 33.9 ± 6.35, which significantly improved to 43.5 ± 5.87 post-intervention (P < 0.001).
EAV is effective in improving disease-specific knowledge among those with COPD. This approach can be incorporated into in-hospital, out-hospital, and healthcare center settings to improve disease-specific knowledge and health-related quality of life among patients with any chronic lung condition.
