Abstract
Labor is generally considered as an indescribably painful condition. Non-pharmacological methods applied by midwives during labor are very effective in relieving labor pain. This study was conducted to determine what the opinions of midwives working in the delivery room about non-pharmacological methods used to relieve labor pain are and how they perform such methods.
This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in public hospitals in Izmir, a province in western Türkiye. The study sample comprised 151 midwives who volunteered to participate in the study and met the inclusion criteria.
The participating midwives' mean length of service in the profession was 19.07 years. Of them, 80.1% stated that non-pharmacological methods should be used during labor. There was a statistically significant relationship between their working in a mother-friendly hospital and their opinions on the use of pharmacological methods during labor (p < 0.05). There was a statistically significant and negative relationship between the midwives' length of service in the profession and the number of non-pharmacological methods they had heard of (r=-0.198, p < 0.05).
The participating midwives were aware of the necessity of applying non-pharmacological pain relief methods in delivery. Their application of non-pharmacological methods was greatly affected by the institutions' approaches to this issue and their not having received training on the subject.
