Abstract

Imaging is the center-point in the management of head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC), as it helps define the extent of the primary tumor, assess regional nodal involvement, detect distant metastases, guide treatment planning, and aid in prognostication and post-treatment surveillance. With advances in molecular imaging, the role of functional imaging techniques has expanded considerably, in particular 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission computed tomography-computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) has demonstrated added value over conventional imaging and clinical assessment, leading to changes in staging. This article discusses the utility of FDG PET/CT in evaluation of HNSCC.
