Abstract

Outpatient radiology is an indispensable part of patient-centered healthcare in Germany. However, successfully managing a radiology practice requires far more than medical expertise. Radiologists in private practice must navigate a complex landscape comprised of patient-centered care, legal requirements, economic constraints, and organizational challenges. This article outlines the essential framework conditions for entrepreneurial action in outpatient radiology: from the legal foundations of establishing a practice to tax planning opportunities and business management tools, as well as aspects of personnel management, brand development, and local networking. Business plans and key performance indicators are presented as instruments for data-driven decision-making in strategic practice planning. Legal competence in employment law and professional recruiting are critical success factors in light of the shortage of skilled workers. Marketing and digital visibility are evolving into relevant competitive factors, while patient-centered communication - particularly in light of AI-supported report interpretation - is gaining importance. This article presents entrepreneurial thinking as an integral part of medical identity and identifies concrete approaches for designing radiology practices in a legally secure, organizationally efficient, and economically viable future-oriented manner.
