The use of oral dietary supplements in patients with atopic dermatitis: The Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 Study.

Abstract

Many patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) seek alternative therapies, although international recommendations of AD treatment do not support their use as a part of standard AD therapy. However, studies on this topic are limited.
To evaluate the use of oral dietary supplements (ODS) in a general AD population using data from patients with AD in their mid-thirties in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986 (NFBC1986) (n = 8892).
The association between AD and ODS use was calculated using logistic regression analyses.
A total of 2,856 participants answered the question about AD, and 417 (14.6%) self-reported doctor-diagnosed AD. ODS use was reported by 898 respondents (31.4%). Use of ODS was more frequent in respondents with AD (37.6%) than among those without (30.4%; P = .003). In the logistic regression analyses, after adjusting, patients with AD had a significantly increased risk of using ODS compared with those without AD (OR, 1.37; 95% CI, 1.08-1.74).
Despite advancements in AD treatment, ODS use remains common among patients with AD. Clinicians should follow AD treatment guidelines and provide patients with reliable information about ODS in AD.
