Abstract
The objective was to determine the prevalence of occupational exposures to biological material (OEBMs) in Brazil according to categories of health workers with secondary and higher education and to describe their regional distribution, sociodemographic profile, and exposure characteristics. This cross-sectional ecological study used data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) and the National Registry of Health Facilities (CNES). Prevalence was defined as the number of accidents divided by the total professionals per category and was three times higher among secondary-level workers than among those with higher education, with surgical technologists and biomedical scientists standing out, respectively. Proportionally, the highest occurrence was observed among nursing technicians and nurses. Cases were concentrated in the South and Southeast regions, among women aged 20-39 years and formally employed workers. Black individuals predominated among secondary-level workers, whereas white individuals predominated among those with higher education. Surgical procedures and intravenous medication administration were the main circumstances. These findings highlight the need to prioritize occupational safety, continuing education, and improved data quality for epidemiological surveillance.
