Abstract
Self-rated health (SHL) has been used in health surveys as a predictor of morbidity and mortality risk. Increasing age and differences between how men and women evaluate their health are still controversial in the literature regarding how they affect this perception. The objective of this article is to measure the differences in SHL in elderly women and men and to try to explain them from a gender perspective. This is a cross-sectional study using data from 3,263 participants aged 60 or over at the baseline of the ELSA-Brasil (Longitudinal Study of Adult Health), which took place between 2008 and 2010. Multivariate analysis was performed by multinomial logistic regression, adopting the forward stepwise procedure. The crude and adjusted relative risk ratios were calculated, with a 95% confidence interval (CI). All analyses were stratified by sex. AAS was better in white women, with high social support, who had not been hospitalized or experienced financial difficulties in the last year, as well as in men with better social cohesion. Knowledge about how men and women perceive their health will promote the adoption of measures in public policies and in the individual approach of health professionals who work with this population.
