Abstract
Population surveys have widely used the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale (EBIA, acronym in Portuguese) to measure food insecurity in the country. Despite its well-established psychometric properties, few studies have evaluated its measurement invariance between territories, which is essential to ensure the validity of regional comparisons. This study investigated EBIA invariance regarding urban/rural areas, macro-regions, and Brazilian states based on data from the 2013 Brazilian National Household Sample Survey (PNAD, acronym in Portuguese). It analyzed the eight general/adult EBIA items by alignment in three independent partitions of the sample (116,543 households). The results indicated that the EBIA showed invariance between urban and rural areas and partial invariance between regions and between states. These findings reinforce the validity of the EBIA to monitor and compare food insecurity across Brazil.
