Increasing trend in prediabetes and obesity among adolescent school children in Chennai city in Southern India.

Abstract

In 2006, we reported presence of cardiometabolic abnormalities including impaired fasting glucose (IFG) in 85% of overweight adolescent children. In this study, we assessed the change in the prevalence of IFG and its association with cardiometabolic risk factors among adolescent school children in the low and middle income group after a period of 17 years.
The cross - sectional study was conducted in 2023 among students aged 12 to 19 years in Chennai city using a similar methodology as in 2006 survey. Demography, anthropometry, body composition and vital signs were recorded. Fasting blood sample was drawn to estimate blood glucose and lipid parameters.
We enrolled a total of 954 students (girls, n = 587; boys, n = 367). In 2023, a higher proportion reported family history of diabetes, had higher body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), systolic blood pressure and fasting blood glucose than in 2006. Girls continued to have higher BMI, body fat % and lipid parameters than boys. Prevalence of IFG was higher by several fold when compared with 2006 (28·1% vs. 3·1% in girls; 26·4% vs. 3·5% in boys, p < 0.0001 for all). Younger age (≤15 years) was found to be significantly associated with IFG.
Prevalence of IFG and obesity increased simultaneously among adolescent children in Southern India. The rise in IFG in younger children could be attributed to early metabolic changes triggered by environmental factors; indicating a likelihood of further increase in the prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular risk among young adults.
