Abstract

The need for efficient, real-time monitoring of vapor-phase fission products in nuclear systems is critical for advancing nuclear technologies. This study explores a dual-spectroscopy technique, combining ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorbance and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), to detect and quantify vapor-phase chlorides and molecular iodine under high-temperature conditions. Using a custom-built high-temperature optical cell, we successfully identified and quantified iodine (I2), niobium pentachloride (NbCl5), molybdenum pentachloride (MoCl5), and zirconium tetrachloride (ZrCl4) in both pure and mixed states. Our results demonstrate the robustness of this dual-spectroscopy approach for real-time chemical and elemental monitoring, supporting its application in molten salt reactors (MSRs) and other advanced nuclear technologies. This work establishes a technique for improved safeguards and material accountancy in nuclear systems.
