Please note that the synopsis will appear in PubMed: Systemic mycoses are clinically relevant infections to cats and dogs throughout the world. Diagnosis can be challenging, as clinical findings are highly variable and overlap with many other inflammatory diseases; many fungal pathogens are ubiquitous; and fungal organisms can be sparse in pathology samples. Multiple diagnostics, routine laboratory work, imaging, pathology, and biomarkers are often required to support the diagnosis. Early recognition of a possible systemic mycosis is key, facilitating an early diagnosis and treatment.
