Perceived health impacts among residents living near plastic and paper waste recycling facilities in Kuala Langat, Malaysia.

Abstract

This study examined self-reported symptoms and perceived environmental conditions among communities residing near plastic and paper waste recycling facilities in Kuala Langat, Malaysia. A cross-sectional community health survey was conducted among 520 respondents. The most reported respiratory symptoms were cough (33.7%, n = 173), sore throat (31.0%, n = 159), and runny nose (26.7%, n = 137). Eye-related symptoms were also frequently reported, including itchy eyes (43.5%, n = 223), watery eyes (40.4%, n = 207), and red eyes (36.5%, n = 187). The main dermatological symptoms were dry or cracked skin (35.7%, n = 183), itchiness (20.3%, n = 104), skin redness (9.9%, n = 51) and skin discoloration (7.4%, n = 38). Significant associations were observed between selected sociodemographic characteristics and several respiratory, ocular, dermal and gastrointestinal symptoms. Residential duration was significantly associated with runny nose, nasal blockage and sore throat, while smoking status and second-hand smoke exposure were associated with selected respiratory and ocular symptoms. Respondents also reported environmental concerns, including fumes, smoke, unpleasant odour and dirty water in their residential area. However, these findings should be interpreted cautiously, as the study was based on self-reported symptoms and perceived environmental conditions, without direct environmental monitoring or clinical verification. The findings highlight the need for continuous environmental health surveillance, improved community engagement and further studies integrating health assessment with air and water quality monitoring near recycling and waste-processing facilities.
