Abstract

A new flavanone glycoside, namely aizoonoside A (1), was isolated from the whole plant of Aizoon africanum, alongside seven known compounds (2-8). The characterisation of the isolated component was evidenced by means of spectroscopic and spectrometric analyses including 1D and 2D NMR, IR, and HRESIMS. The antimicrobial activity of crude extract, fractions, and some isolated compounds was evaluated against one fungi and five multi-resistant bacterial strains. Among the extracts and fractions produced, the CH2Cl2 fraction displayed the best activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 (MIC = 19.5 µg/mL), while also displaying activity against Candida albicans ATCC10231 with an MIC value of 39.1 µg/mL. Regarding the pure compounds, the best activity (MIC = 19.5 µg/mL) was obtained for compound 7 against S. aureus ATCC25923 and C. albicans ATCC10231. The present work reports for the first time the isolation of a glycosylated flavonoid from A. africanum.
