Abstract
This study examines the prevalence and distribution of intestinal parasites among three canid populations in Pennsylvania: companion domestic dogs, domestic dogs involved in hunting activities, and wild canids (red fox (Vulpes vulpes), gray fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus), and coyote (Canis latrans)). Using a broad qPCR panel (Keyscreen™ GI Parasite PCR), we analyzed 26,981 companion dog samples, 59 hunting dog samples, and 262 wild canid samples to determine parasite diversity and prevalence. The PCR panel detected significant differences in parasite prevalence among the three populations with wild canids showing the highest overall parasite prevalence. The study demonstrates the utility of molecular diagnostic techniques for parasite surveillance and discusses implications for understanding zoonotic disease risk, ecological patterns, and public health considerations. Our findings highlight the complex dynamics of parasite transmission between wild and domestic canids and emphasize the importance of regular parasite screening in animals with potential wildlife exposure.
