Forests: methane sinks or methane sources?

Abstract

Forests are not a uniform methane (CH₄) sink; soils, stems, and canopies act as sources or sinks depending on local conditions. We synthesize emerging evidence, expose the limitations of component-based approaches, and advocate integrated observational-modeling frameworks to accurately quantify net forest CH₄ exchange and climate feedbacks.
