Abstract
To assess the effectiveness of daily mouthrinsing with a 2% green coffee solution on the quantitative and qualitative parameters of dental plaque and saliva among young adults.
Two hundred college adults were randomly assigned (n = 100) to the experimental - green coffee mouthrinse and control groups - distilled water as mouthrinses for 3 months. The baseline data pertaining to quantitative parameters - oral hygiene index (OHI), plaque index (PI), microbiological colony-forming units (CFU) of Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacillus acidophilus and qualitative parameters of salivary pH, buffering capacity, viscosity, and flow rate were recorded at baseline, after 3 months use of the mouthrinse, and at 6 months (after a wash-out period). Descriptive statistics were calculated and expressed, and the paired t-test, independent t-test, and analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed to evaluate the effect of mouthrinse use on components of oral health. The p-value was set at <0.05.
Oral hygiene index improved from 1.45 ± 1.08 to 0.90 ± 0.80, p = 0.0048, and the PI improved from 0.41 ± 0.25 to 0.23 ± 0.21, p = 0.00039, among the intervention group, while similar improvements were also seen among the control group. pH, buffering capacity, viscosity, and flow rate showed no significant difference among both the intervention as well as the control group. Use of green coffee significantly decreased the oral concentration of S. mutans 77,600 ± 20,658 to 59,800 ± 16,719.7, p = 0.0000918 and L. acidophilus 13,740 ± 1,871.4 to 11,980 ± 1,463.7, p = 0.000000059 from baseline to 3M among the intervention group, while the improvement was not seen significantly among the control group.
In conclusion, the green coffee mouthrinse did have a positive effect on indicators of oral health in terms of reducing bacterial concentration and improving OHI and PI.
Chlorhexidine (CHX) is often considered the gold standard in therapeutic mouthrinsing. However, the adverse effects of the same on long-term use cannot be ignored.
