Abstract
Farm machinery significantly enhances agricultural productivity but remains a leading source of occupational injuries, particularly in resource-limited settings. This comprehensive review synthesises the primary human-, equipment-, environmental-, and weather-related causes of such injuries and critically evaluates mitigation strategies, incorporating new evidence on the interplay between machinery reliability and operator safety. A systematic review integrated literature published 2000-2025 across multiple databases. Intervention effectiveness was appraised using a multi-step methodology combining GRADE-based quality assessment, statistical inter-rater agreement (Cohen's κ = 0.84), and internal reliability testing (Cronbach's α = 0.83). The findings reveal that human factors, including inadequate training, fatigue, and cognitive decline, are the most prevalent risk contributors, followed by equipment-related issues such as outdated machinery and poor maintenance, and context-specific environmental and weather hazards. High-impact interventions include mandatory operator training, preventive and predictive maintenance protocols, retrofitting safety-critical components, and deploying sensor-based hazard detection. The newly integrated reliability framework highlights four mutually reinforcing pillars-design, maintenance, operations, and management systems-that demonstrate how engineering reliability directly reduces hazardous failures and improves safety metrics. This evidence-driven synthesis underscores the need to combine human factors interventions, ergonomic design, environmental adaptations, weather preparedness, and engineering reliability improvements to achieve the strongest safety outcomes, especially when supported by policy enforcement and training systems.
