[Lead exposure in children: reanalysis of the EMBLEMA study using severity inference and geographical disaggregation].

Abstract

The EMBLEMA study quantified lead, cadmium, and arsenic exposure in children from the Sierra Minera of La Unión-Cartagena, and it found a significant difference in blood lead between the mining and control areas, yet the public communication framed it as "no cause for alarm". The objective is to critically examine this conclusion through: 1) severe statistical inference; 2) analysis of intra-zone geographical heterogeneity reflecting the multifocal distribution of contamination; and 3) evaluation of the clinical relevance of the detected excess.
Reanalysis of means and confidence intervals published by the Epidemiology Service of the Region of Murcia.
The mean difference between the mining and control areas (1.65 vs 1.08μg/dL) guarantees, with severity>97.5%, a minimum excess of 0.38μg/dL. The mining area showed internal heterogeneity.
The EMBLEMA data document a blood lead excess that is statistically robust, geographically heterogeneous, and clinically relevant.
