Abstract

Personal wearable technology has transitioned from consumer novelty to professional practice, revolutionizing the way clinicians deliver care and function in health care environments. Devices such as earbuds and smart glasses are increasingly present in health care settings, either to assist an individual perform their work, streamline communication, improve access to information and care, or simply as personal preference. Regardless of purpose, some argue that these technologies are blurring personal and professional boundaries. Use of earbuds results in concerns about cultural consequences, relationships, communication, patient safety, and teamwork. This editorial provides a balanced exploration of personal technology implications in clinical settings and proposes considerations for responsible management.
