Technological and scientific outlook on sericin from extraction to advanced derivatives for wound healing and drug delivery: Evidence from patent analysis (2015 to 2025).

Abstract

Numerous natural biopolymers have been explored recently in support of wound healing and drug delivery. Among these, sericin a globular protein derived from silkworms has emerged as a vital candidate due to its inherent bioactivity and biocompatibility. While the biological properties and traditional extraction of sericin are well discussed and documented in scientific journals. However, the technological advancements currently protected by patent applications remain under-discussed. To address this gap, the present review provides a combined scientific and technological outlook on sericin, focusing specifically on patent protected developments published from 2015 and 2025. Additionally, the present review examines patent-protected extraction technologies and device-based innovations that have played a crucial role in producing high-quality sericin for downstream applications. Further, we analysed selected patents to illustrate how chemically engineered sericin derivatives are being developed for targeted delivery, imaging, and controlled release. Through this review, we present evidence that highlights both the growing biomedical interest in extraction of sericin using innovative devices/methods and functional derivatives of sericin. Furthermore, these findings also indicate significant opportunities for future research and patent-driven development of advanced sericin extraction methods and its derivatives for wound healing and drug delivery applications.
