Abstract
Water insecurity refers to lacking stable access to enough safe water for drinking and domestic use. To understand the communication needs of individuals who have experienced water insecurity, we analyzed World Risk Poll data from over 125,000 participants across 121 countries. We present three key findings. First, having experienced water insecurity was associated with lower perceived disaster preparedness. Second, participants who had experienced water insecurity trusted disaster information providers slightly less, though local media and emergency services were highly trusted. Third, worry about water safety was more strongly correlated with worry about severe weather than with worry about climate change, especially among individuals who had experienced water insecurity. Therefore, individuals who have experienced water insecurity may benefit from communications that improve disaster preparedness, leverage local media and emergency services, and emphasize threats of severe weather to water safety.
