Real-World Canadian Insights into Pediatric Growth Hormone Deficiency: Perspectives on Daily and Long-Acting Growth Hormone from Patients, Caregivers, and Healthcare Providers.

Abstract

Many patients with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) do not reach their target height in adulthood which is largely linked to treatment non-adherence. Patients report preferring a less frequent treatment regimen. Research is needed to explore reasons for non-adherence and treatment regimen preferences in patients with GHD. The purpose of this study was to explore GHD treatment preferences in health care practitioners (HCPs), patients with GHD aged 12-17 years, and caregivers of patients with GHD aged 3-17 years living in Canada.
This qualitative interview study comprised of 60-minute interviews with Canadian HCPs, adolescents with GHD, and caregivers of pediatric patients. Interviews explored treatment decisions, adherence, access barriers, and preferences between daily and once-weekly growth hormone treatment regimens. Thematic analysis of interview transcripts was conducted.
12 HCPs and 25 patient/caregiver interviews were completed. Limited awareness of once-weekly treatments and equity issues were observed across all participant groups. Most caregivers and patients preferred once-weekly injections for convenience and reduced burden. Emotional and logistical challenges were noted, especially for daily regimens. HCPs reported positive transitions to once-weekly regimens, though concerns remain about long-term data and coverage. Preferences leaned toward less invasive formats (e.g, pills) and medications that do not require refrigeration.
This study explored experiences of Canadian GHD patients, caregivers, and HCPs, revealing strong preferences for once-weekly GH treatment due to convenience and reduced burden. Findings also highlighted gaps in treatment awareness, support, and education, emphasizing the need for targeted information and expanded patient resources.
