Ecological restoration of coal gangue: A review on resource-utilization technologies and risk management.

Abstract

Coal gangue, a carbon-bearing rock generated from coal mining processes including tunnel development, excavation, coal extraction, and washing, accounts for approximately 25% of China's annual industrial waste output. Its extensive stockpiling occupies substantial land resources and poses risks of environmental pollution and geological hazards. Despite these challenges, coal gangue-rich in organic matter and mineral components-exhibits considerable potential for comprehensive utilization. Hence, research focusing on its ecological remediation and pollution prevention is of significant relevance. Based on an analysis of the physicochemical properties of coal gangue, this paper reviews its ecological applications in land reclamation, saline-alkali soil amendment, and vegetation root-zone improvement, examines environmental risks associated with its utilization, and assesses physical, chemical, and biological remediation technologies. Furthermore, it proposes optimized strategies for the ecological restoration of coal gangue, aiming to provide guidance for its sustainable use and to promote ecological sustainability in mining areas.
