Abstract

Developing advanced secondary batteries to adapt to the increasingly stringent performance requirements demands a fundamental rethinking of battery regulation strategies. Active electrochemical regulation strategies for secondary batteries are an innovative shift from static material design to dynamic electrochemical control, representing a promising frontier of battery regulation. Herein, for the first time, we provide a comprehensive review of recent advances in electrochemical regulation strategies for secondary batteries. Beginning with the fundamental electrochemical principles, this review summarizes the forefront applications of electrochemical regulation strategies, including interface optimization, electrode modulation, and electrochemical preheating techniques. The systematic mechanism analysis is conducted, emphasizing how electric field variation within batteries regulates the thermodynamic and kinetic behaviors of the constituent components, thereby determining the dynamic response of the entire system. Finally, this work outlines the existing challenges in electrochemical regulation and suggests promising directions for future research. Combined with active electrochemical regulation, it is expected to uncover foundational electrochemistry principles of battery performance enhancement, paving the way for theory-guided optimization of secondary batteries.
