Abstract
Hypertension is a preventable cardiovascular risk factor that impacts the health, morbidity, and mortality of patients, with lifestyle playing a decisive role in the development of various related risk factors. However, there is a lack of literature reporting the effect of a residential yoga and naturopathy-based lifestyle modification on cardio-metabolic risk factors in hypertension. Hence, this study was intended to investigate the data of patients with hypertension who underwent a residential yoga and naturopathy-based lifestyle modification.
In this retrospective study, a total of 2102 patients admitted as inpatients at a yoga and naturopathy hospital between August 2019 and October 2022 were screened. Eligible participants' cardio-metabolic risk factors related data [i.e., perceived stress scale (PSS) score, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse rate (PR), pulse pressure (PP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), rate pressure product (RPP), total cholesterol (TC), blood glucose, and anthropometry measurements] were included for analysis.
The length of the stay was 13.81±8.36 days. The results of the study, in general, showed a significant reduction in SBP, DBP, PR, PP, MAP, RPP, TC, fasting blood glucose, PSS scores, weight, body mass index, hip circumference, waist circumference, waist-hip ratio, mid-arm circumference, and mid-thigh circumference in the post-test assessments compared to the pre-test assessments.
This retrospective data analysis suggests that residential yoga and naturopathy-based lifestyle modification are effective in improving cardiovascular function and reducing cardio-metabolic risk factors in patients with hypertension. However, prospective randomized controlled trials with a standard treatment protocol and follow-up period to assess long-term impact are recommended to validate the study's findings.
