Abstract
Lifestyle Medicine (LM) recommendations are increasingly recognized as foundational strategies for preventing and managing chronic diseases. However, despite their growing incorporation into clinical practice, little attention has been given to the temporal demands required for their real-world implementation. This exploratory study aimed to estimate the daily time investment necessary to comply with evidence-based recommendations related to the core pillars of LM. An integrative mixed-methods approach was employed, combining narrative synthesis of guidelines and scientific literature with applied individual time estimations performed by the authors. Evidence-based minimum recommendations suggested a cumulative requirement of approximately 11.4 hours per day dedicated to healthy lifestyle behaviors. Personal estimations demonstrated substantial variability, ranging from 9.8 to 16.7 hours/day. Importantly, the incorporation of "invisible time" components, including preparation, commuting, hygiene, organization, and logistical demands, substantially increased the total temporal burden associated with lifestyle interventions, reaching up to 22.6 hours/day. Findings suggest that time represents a central, yet underrecognized, structural determinant of adherence to LM recommendations and highlight the need for more realistic, integrated, and context-sensitive approaches to lifestyle prescription and implementation.
