Development and psychometric evaluation of the nurses' elder abuse assessment scale.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate the psychometric properties of a nurse-administered instrument for the structured assessment of indicators potentially associated with elder abuse. Scale items were generated through literature review and expert evaluation, yielding a content validity index of 0.878. Each nurse assessed one unique older adult. Exploratory factor analysis included 373 nurse-older adult dyads, and confirmatory factor analysis included 334 independent dyads, totaling 707 assessments. Older adults were required to communicate effectively and be clinically suitable for assessment; cognitive status was not formally measured. Exploratory analysis showed adequate sampling adequacy (KMO = 0.861) and a significant Bartlett's test (p < .001), identifying a four-factor structure explaining 61.81% of variance. Confirmatory analysis supported the proposed structure, and Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.890 to 0.944. Diagnostic accuracy was not evaluated against an independent reference standard; therefore, sensitivity, specificity, predictive values, and clinically meaningful cutoff scores remain to be established.
