Perspectives of Parents of Children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities: An Exploration of Inclusive Education in Botswana.

Abstract

This study examined parents' views on the inclusion of their children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through six focus group discussions involving parents from two public primary schools in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas of South-Central Botswana. Using purposive sampling, data were analyzed through content analysis. Findings revealed that parents primarily expressed concerns about the lack of suitable programs for their children, teachers' preparedness and teaching quality. Whereas some parents favored specific programs, there was no consensus on the most appropriate option. The discussion emphasizes the need for accessibility, training for parents and teachers, and parental choice in educational decisions.
