[From sex to gender : understanding and integrating gender in psychiatry].

Abstract

Health differences between women and men are explained not only by biological sex but also by gender, which encompasses the roles, norms, and social relations that shape living conditions and access to healthcare. In psychiatry, a gender-sensitive approach places mental disorders within their social context, leading to a more comprehensive patient care. In research, moving beyond simple comparisons between women and men requires integrating gender-related variables to better understand the mechanisms underlying health inequalities. Within the Gender*CoLaus project, several methodological approaches are being explored to capture these dimensions in the Lausanne population, with the aim of advancing both research and clinical practice towards greater precision and equity.
