Abstract
BackgroundSocial role participation (RP) is a key outcome in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). The Social Role Participation Questionnaire (SRPQ) assesses RP, its limitations, and satisfaction with performance.ObjectiveThis study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the SRPQ into Turkish and evaluate its validity and reliability in individuals with AS.MethodsThe SRPQ was translated and culturally adapted following established guidelines. A total of 129 Turkish-speaking patients with AS were included in this multicenter, cross-sectional study. Internal consistency was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha, and test-retest reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC). Construct validity was evaluated through correlations with the AS Quality of Life (ASQoL) Scale, Short Form Health Survey 36 (SF-36), and the Work Productivity and Activity Impairment (WPAI) scale.ResultsThe Turkish SRPQ showed good to excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha, 0.734-0.963) and test-retest reliability (ICC, 0.736-0.963). The physical difficulty dimension correlated strongly with the ASQoL (r = 0.756), WPAI-Q6 (r = 0.694), and the SF-36 physical functioning score (r = -0.658) (all p < 0.001). Satisfaction with performance was moderately correlated with the SF-36 physical functioning (r = 0.556, p < 0.001). Role importance showed weaker yet statistically significant correlations with SF-36 subscales, strongest for physical functioning (r = 0.373, p < 0.001), mental health (r = 0.299, p = 0.001), and vitality/energy (r = 0.272, p = 0.002).ConclusionThe Turkish version of the SRPQ is a valid, reliable, and culturally appropriate instrument for assessing social RP in Turkish-speaking patients with AS.
